i already posted this in subs and enclosures, but i kinda need an answer soon. i built a box for one 15" compvr, designed to look like a spare tire in an suv. it looks like an uppercase "D" on its side. for that rounded section, i used 1/4" polystyrene sheet, two layers of fiberglass cloth, and almost a qt of resin. is this going to be sturdy enough, or am i going to need to use additional resin, cloth, etc?

2 layers seems a little light. I would double that before testing. For perspective, I use at least a gallon to a gallon and a half and 30 square feet of mat for a spare tire well and it is supported by the well...

your walls should be at least 0.25 thick if not you will have problems.
and like dukk said make sure to use enough mat, if you don't it will be brittle.

Use heavy fiberglass roving instead of fiberglass mat, and you might even want to sandwich 1/4" polyurethane foam core between fiberglass "skins".

The roving is stronger than mat, although more expensive but you'll need less of it to get the same strength with mat.

Then by sandwiching the foam core between "skins" of fiberglass, you create a composite panel that performs much like a steel I-beam. In an I-beam, the two "flat" sections (flanges)themselves are very weak over a long run, but when they are linked together with the skinny vertical section (web) the whole assembly is very strong.

When fiberglass is done this way, you end up with an EXTREMELY rigid, strong and lightweight piece.

There's another fiberglass product called "Nytex". It's a fiberglass cloth with mat stitched to one side. It's extremely heavy stuff and 3 layers builds up to 1/8" thick. The best part is this stuff is cheap.. around $7-$9 per yard.. and it's seriously strong.
