Anybody know how to do those cool raised logos? I have seen them on show cars. The words are raised from the main panel and then usually covered in vinyl. I want to do a Rockford Fosgate on my trunk lid. Would it be easier to do a carving with a router to make a sunken (?) logo? How hard are these to do?

Sir:

I usually use Vinyl under Vinyl. I either get a cheap sticker cut of the design I want raised or just make a copy from a copy machine. Lightly glue down a scrap of vinyl to the area where you want the logo. (make sure it is larger than the logo.) Then I lightly spray glue the paper copied logo to the vinyl. ( or apply the sticker) Cut out the design with an exacto knife. Pull up the excess vinyl, (revealing the logo you want raised)(your edges need to be close but not perfect.) then glue the area throughly, and apply the real covering material. IMPORTANT!!! do not press the vinyl, just lay it in place, then start your smoothing work with the edges of your raised area. Once the raised logo is pressed out then smoothe the rest of the material.

For this process I recomend using "Red Weldwood" glue. It holds the best.

I hope this helps.

That would only make a raised design about an 1/8 inch high right? What about something that comes up about a half inch? Multiple layers of vinyl?

I've used 1/4 masonite, and 1/2 inch weatherstrip for the same purpose. I used the masonite under carpet, and the foam under vinyl.

That may be a little high for vinyl work. I will use 1/4" wood on carpet work though.

Dynamat makes a good material for under vinyl - it is self adhesive and there are always scraps lying around....

Thanks guys.
I think I will try the Dynamat suggestion and just use a couple of layers. I never thought about using that.
Thanx again
