i've been told that jl w3's shouldn't be put in ported boxes and that they perform best in a sealed box. i'm going with 3 10w3's in a custom box and i want to know if i will get louder (but still clean) sound from a ported box with 3 w3's as opposed to a sealed box with the same subs.

Hey Dukk, been meaning to ask you about this, seems like a good place. I know you love ported boxes. Just out of curiousity, what would you do if someone had there heart set on a sub that just wasn't designed to be in a ported box, say a solobaric, or an alumapro alchemy? I mean do you still try to port them, have you had any luck at doing this? Or do you just seal them? Just curious, I've been a big sealed fan for a long time, but I've heard a few ported enclosures as of late that I really enjoyed.

Wow, ported solo, you are the "port man". I many have to check with you before I start designing on my girlfriends car, her system is kinda my "experimental" vehicle to try out stuff I would like to try in my own eventually.

The biggest myth of them all. there is nothing that a sealed box can do that a ported box cannot. Nothing.
I'd like everyone of you to experience our sub shack, I know it's not possible, but I would. I have 8 12" RFZ rockfords in there ported and the response is +- .5dB from 28hz-80hz. after we had this room built it was the final nail in the coffin with us for sealed boxes. I doubt anymore will ever leave this shop. SO PORT IT OR ELSE. hehe

any sub that you can seal can definitely work in a 5th order band pass. which gives you the added output if you design for narrow pass band and peak gain. you can still have a band pass with average gain of 3dB above reference efficiency, and still retain optimum sound quality. CAD can always help to find your optimum minimum vent size and you will be totally satisfied. "Either Port Yours, Or Get Blown Away By Those That Will Port Their's" Best Regards, Steve

Dr.Hertz, there is one thing, and as far as I know this is the only thing a sealed enclosure can do that a ported one can not, and that is fit in a small space. With many pickups in my area, for years the only enclosure you would see was sealed. The installers (one mainly) would only due sealed largely due to their simplicity, but also out of ignorance. I'm the only one I know of in my area doing ported enclosures, and many of my enclosures KILL!!

I used to run into that. Then we got a pair of truck boxes in the store: a pair of 10s sealed, and a single 10 ABC. Guess which one we sold a whole lot more of.... Sometimes you just gotta prove it!
