We just did one that was kind of different. We were going for a machined look for the install. So we build an amp rack out of square tube metal. We kept that theme going with a metal "cage" for the sub box and optima battery. The box has an unusual finish. Our shop does outside sales for Linex spray in liner, so we had them spray the box. It turned out real good. The Brahma was inverse mounted, and we sanded off the black paint on the back plate and brushed it to match the rest of the metal in the install.

Just to add, as a joke we had them spray our toilet seat at work without telling the boss. It took him a couple days to find it. It's actually quite comfortable, and you don't have to worry about slipping off. [Big Grin]

If it takes you 7 layers of primer to get it right, you're not doing something correctly.

Hahaham that would kool for a while, then its would look like crap. It would get all dirty and blah.
>So more layers of primer will make paint smoother? When I put the paint on, it was smooth as glass. Like, amazing. Then i sanded the paint to see what would happen and it was just crappy. Maybe the paint i have is more "rubbery" than others?

MDF is very very porous. Something you might try is using a wood filler first, then one coat of primer.

Wet sanding vs. dry sanding the primer isn't too important, but the wetsanding helps you keep it level.

Once you have your primer prepared to 320 grit smoothness, your paint should go on smooth.

You might try hitting your primer with some 3/0 or 4/0 steel wool (after its dried off!!!!!!) to make it even smoother.

Employ a raking technique, this is very important: Most defects are apparent in "raking" light patterns.

A raking light is one such that it shines in a shallow angle to the surface, and look at the surface opposite the light, from a shallow angle as well.

Good luck!

Thanx alot for your help. I used 4 layers of primer(with sanding between the coats) I also used black 1000 grit paper. It was smooooth as hell!
Can you teach my your raking technique! haha. I gotta get some style here! So my best bet is just one nice layer of paint right? not 2 or 3?

when you try to paint over 1000 grit sanded primer, you might run into adhesion problems or drip problems. I use no finer than 600 grit and it is shiny by the time i'm done. my dad paints cars for a living, and he says to use 3 thin coats of primer, wetsand it with 400 grit then spray 2 thin coats of paint it and use 1500-2000 grit on the paint then use rubbing compound on that to eliminate scratches. it turns out very nice if you do it right. keyword being IF.

to make any finish really shine, you need to polish it. even paint. start at no less than 400 grit and work your way up. the process depends on the materials used. many materials have a specific compound available to finish it off.

That material is pretty hard to work with, it shows every flaw in your finish, so make sure you sand is really really good [Big Grin]

Hey Bidnyk...I just recently finished painting my sub box and used a lotta primer first. Althought I didn't sand the primer at all, the finish paint still came out a nice shiny smooth finish. I used a black wrinkle finish for my box, but I think the cold in the garage affected it which IMO doesn't look to good. I'll get some pics of my box up sometime this week...and hit me up on AIM if ya can!!

wrinkle paint needs def needs heat. I have used a couple different kinds. they both were very similar. the stuff doesn't wrinkle until it cures. the faster it cures, the more aggresive the wrinkle. aka, if you use a heat lamp/gun you can get some major wrinkle action.
