I just put four subs in my car. Sealed
box facing the rear of car. The car is a 91 mercury sable. The problem is now that I have more than one driver, the force of all four subs is blowing past the seal on the trunk. Losing lots of SPL.. I HATE THAT !!!
MY thought is to use lots of sound deadening material to keep the energy inside the car but simply using the SDMaterial by it self, will not keep the deck lid from lefting or the trunk walls from flexing or would it?
So, If I fiberglass the trunk to reinforce it and use SDMaterial, that should do the trick? RIGHT? I mean SDMaterial alone will not be enough Right? and though the fiberglassing is a big job, It would yeild great benefits, and the two together would be about perfect. RIGHT?
And to get even more complex, I am wonder if I should take it one step further by framing in the trunk area with 3/4 inch mdf. I need to make an amp rack so I could kill two birds with one stone.
And in order to keep the bass waves off of the deck lid and blowing by the seal, I could mount a piece of lexan just blow the rim of the trunk opening. I would make this removable for access.
True all of this would be alot of work which I am willing to do but just how much of it is really needed? I say the more the better !!!....
For all you pros out there in Bass Land,
give me a hand........

Some sort of wood or Lexan chamber in front of the subs might be a good idea. That way, it effectively keeps the pressure in the car, and vents it in a forward direction, so you no longer have the loss through the trunk seal. Making it removable is a good idea also.

Have you tried removing the sound deadening material from behind the back seat? Generally, that stuff really works! Also, I'd be taking any stock speakers out of the rear deck, and maybe thinking about opening up the steel under the there to help more airflow through to the passenger compartment. If that doesn't work, just as a test, remove the back seat, and see if that helps, you can put it back in. If that helps, you know you need to do something to help the wave propogate in the front of the car.

STILL waiting to hear a GOOD pair of HLCD's!!

If it dont fit, force it... if it breaks, it needed to be replaced anyway...

Audiophyle, most of what you said has already been done. the thing is that the most of the bass does not propogate into the cabin because at 122 db and above it forces it's way past the seal of the trunk and through the walls of the trunk.
True the box is big and does block 90-95%of the path from the trunk to the cab. I will make the box alittle smaller next time, so that will help me some.
Facing the subs forward really kills the low end and spl so that position is out. Bandpass would channel everything into the cab but I know the sub work well in the sealed box and I do not want to play around anymore, testing bandpass boxes till I find a nice design.
Thank you for your input, have any more for me ? .... HELP???????

Ok, try porting the box, through the rear deck of the car. Other than that, you could try taking the decklid off, and doing about 4 layers of fiberglass. If that still doesn't work, you may have to adjust the latch to pull the trunk down tighter, or maybe even try another bead of weather stripping around the existing seal already there...

did you turn the box around?
If that doesnt help put 3/4 mdf and maybe some fiberglass. not much else you can do if the box is that big: )
