What hi-amp alt's does everyone use? I have a few pointers for the budget minded.Need 140 amps of midsized case power?-> over the counter@pep boys, ask for a 1994 Cadillac Deville 4.5 liter eng. application, about $190.with core charge.(its the same as what Phoenix gold<&others> were selling for $380.Also, I have a contact to get NEW Leece-Neville commercial 165 amp alternators(ambluance large frame, built in regulator)for under $300. I can help on regulator wiring Q's

Well you might want to look in to getting the stock one "rewound." Depending on how much out put you need you may get it from just that.

the problem with getting the stock alt. "re-wound" is that the diodes won't be capable of the new-found output and run hot, eventulally cooking themselves.

In theory the rectifier diodes would run hot, but wouldn't they be as easy to replace (and cheap) as rewinding the alternator? Do them both at the same time

Dr Alarm
would you know anyone that has a 200 amp or more for a semi? i currently have a 160 amp delco alt. and every 10,000 miles it cooks and the belts disintegrate.so im looking for a larger one. i already added a second 2 gauge wire from the alt to the starter. but no difference. with all of my sidemarker lights and my amplifiers,i need more power.
the local rebuild shop wants $1500 for a 200 amp fire engine alternater.that is way tooo much

any suggestions, contacts, would be greatly appreciated

1500 bucks? Good lord. That is nuts. I payed 240 for each one of mine. They do 214 amps each. I have three of them in my Astro van. They are in Ford largecases and they pump out the juice. I have no probs pumping out 10000+ watts.

well the guy here told me it was a special winding since the diesel engine's RPM's max out at 2200rpms. i just told him i would replace the 160 every year and still be less than $1500. but the distances i travel it becomes a pain in the A$$. especially at 3 in the morning.
and yes i carry a spare alt. and it uses 2 belts.

if i remeber correctly the guy said i need a delco "J " style case.does that sound correct?

any ideas anyone?

I just bought a propower 170A alternator and it kicks ass. It is rated differently than other alternators. Most are rated cold, this is rated hot. The 170 amp will actually do 210A@14.7V. I saw this on a alternator tester. I have know idea what the one he rates at 200A will put out when its cold. He also makes a 140A model. All put out full output at very low rpm's. The 170A cost $454.00 and it works great. when I turn up my stereo the car actually slows down the alternator takes so much power from the engine (I'm in a toyota Paseo).I did have to add a back side idler to get more belt rap around the alternator. I could destroy a belt in seconds before that. This alternator runs cleaner if anything than the origanal stock one. If your interested the # is
toll free 888 632-4626 or 626 963-5910.
Be careful about what you buy. Not all alternators put out what they say!
