The RIAA has lost their mind. If you use p2p software you might be in court soon. The RIAA rides into battle, guns blazing Not only that, but they are suing four students for operating Napster-like file-sharing services on their campus networks without giving them any notice. RIAA Hits Students Where It Hurts and RIAA sues campus file-swappers . Being that I owned a record label I have conflicting views on the matter, but this is insane. If the record industry doesn't realize it's a brave new world, they don't deserve to last. I don’t mean that I think it’s right to steal someone’s intellectual property, but they FOR SURE need to learn to embrace new technology not fight it. They WILL lose if they don't. There is too much great music (better that what is crammed down your throat) out there by artists that want you to have their music and use technology as a tool. I do want to point out that all artists deserve money for their music if they want it. IMO there is just a better way of getting it than this. Rant Over

they aint gonna get everyone out there. they will only go after people with an INSANE amount of files. personally, once you get enough mp3's to make a CD, make the CD then delete the mp3's.

I read about that the other week...So I still share MP3's but once they are dled I move them to a different folder...I have like 4GB of MP3's that I will not delete. I usually get most of MP3's off IRC anyhow.

RIAA is basically for music...don't worry 'bout yer gay porn But movies from WB and companies like that...THEY WILL GETCHOOOOOO...DL this p2p firewall called PeerGuardian it blocks a lot of government and riaa ips so they can't search your directory for mp3's and movies

=================MOD EDIT===================== Creative spelling or putting * in an otherwise unacceptable word does NOT make it acceptable. I try to be lax as I can in some situations. For example when used in the name of a song. This does not mean that it can be used in the normal course of a post. Please refrain from its use like this in the future. Thanks in advance for your cooperation.
I can buy used hard drives cheap (probably averaging about $1/gig) from friends and other people I come across. I fill em up, then stash them in safe places. The ones I listen to a lot, I keep in password-protected places on my hard drive. I've had this hard drive for not too long now, and I already have a folder with about 5.8 gb of data. I got a full (fried) 30 gig hard drive full, data is recoverable with some work, but I don't need the data right now (its safer at the moment since its inaccessible). For all files over 1 mb, the average file size is 32 mb. None of my data is illegal. I don't download music or other media illegally.
From what I've heard, "they" look in your shared folder for large amounts of media, then, if your folder meets their standards (whatever they may be), they take action. I usually log IPs as much as possible (I have a file on the 30 gb crashed HDD that has a text log file over 2 mb ).
What I don't know, however, is what action they take. How do they go about doing all of this? Especially, what is their proceedure for what they do after they find a person they want to sue?

From what I have read they will sned you a cease and disyst(cant spell that word) order first, but if they decide to sue you I would imagine you will get the court notice on when you need to show up and its something stupid like $750-$1500 per song that they could get out of you.

Actually, in the new wave of lawsuits there has been no warning at all before the lawsuits are filed. The amount they're going for is $150,000 for EACH copywrite infringement. lol

Correct, they are not giving warnings anymore (so they say) and each song can run you between $750-$150,000 EACH Check out www.kazaalite.tk for info to prevent RIAA people and govt official's from looking in your "shared" folder. I have done that already so they can't see my MP3's in kazaa
