I re-listened to this and you're right. The song is a derivative, but not the same. I'm thinking Jeffrey Osborne now (You should be mine), but I don't have a copy of it to verify.
It's definitely late 80's early 90's. It's definitely soul, crooned song. So it's either Osborne, Luther, or something along those lines.
(After having been a DJ now for 15 years, this kind of thing drives me NUTS!)
