Here is the deal. I have amps that put out alot more power at 16 volts but anything over 16 volts and they will go into protect.. so i am trying to design a battery/charging system that will meet my needs..I have 8 amps that require 225 amp fusing but are said to draw 400 amps peak in a burst. but that is rated at 12.5 volts. that is a maximum amperage requirement of 3200 amps if i were running 12.5 volts, but effeciency increases as you up the voltage, so if my figures are correct the amp should only require 325 amps (assuming 15.4 volts under load) for a grand total of 2600 amps!! i have found some large 2200 CCA batteries (ea) that have four 2 volt cells in each one, equalling 8 volts per battery.. i plan to buy four of these and run them at 16 volts. I plan to buy an externally regulated alternator and have been told to set it at 18 volts for charging. ( i plan to use the factory alt and battery for stock vehicle functions) but the problem with this is until i deplete the alternators supplied amperage it wont be back to regular battery voltage (16). i would just do my metering with the vehicle off but that is where my question is..
should i..
A-- adjust the alternators voltage down before a run to 16 volts and just use it as additional voltage and amperage during a run , and then adjust it back up afterwards to charge the batteries???
B-- leave the alternator voltage at 18v but on my podium have a momentary button that will shut off my alternator and another button so i can then burp the system???
C-- use the same alternator disange button to turn off the alternator ( at 18v) but when i burp it let off the alternator button and let it charge to provide some voltage (since under load it wont put out 18v) and additional amperage???

i have not bought any of this yet but i want to get as close as i can to 16 volts if i have to buy batteries/alts etc anyway!!!
help me out this is alot to spend for it to not work ..

Also do you think that this is enough batteries? enough alternator(200A)????
any input will help me decide, so THANKS

can't leave factory alt in and use it if you are running a different voltage to the system, read this rule "· The sound system in the vehicle must be powered by the vehicle’s primary electrical system.

Additional Guidelines:

· The primary electrical system is defined as that which runs all of the electrical components in the vehicle.

· The vehicle’s charging system must be powered by the engine. (External generators, nuclear reactors, fuel-cells, etc. are prohibited.)

· The maximum voltage of the electrical system is 18 volts DC. "

thats directly cut and pasted from the rules.
