What charger does everyone recommend for charging AGM style batteries for the first time (i.e. first charge after shipping) that's decently priced? I was looking at chargers on Summit Racing and saw that a 12v/16v Powermaster AGM charger costs almost as much as a new D3100 batt. Any better choices?

Powermaster charger is bar none the best charger IMO.

What model Ctek? It's not so much that I can't afford the Powermaster, but more that I really can't see spending that much for something that will see limited use at best.

kinketik makes an "intellicharger" you could look into that.

RMCO, why would it see limited use? if your going to compete, you'll be charging your batts after every round and during the off season. It's worth it in the long run for sure.

I don't have any real plans of competing as of right now. I'm piecing together a strong daily driven car and won't have the need to be hooked up to a charger much if at all. I may go with the Powermaster and just convince myself it's a good tool to add to the collection, but if I can get out a little cheaper and still have a solid product I might as well go that route.

Go with the powermaster just for the life of your batteries. I had to make the same choice you have and it came down to after a good night of demoing the alternators would not keep up with a full 2000amp continuous draw so I could top up the batteries in the evening with the powermaster and when it was done it wold go into float mode which seems to stengthen the batteries a good deal over depending on just alternator charge.
The powermaster is the equivilant to having a massage therapist for your batteries after a rough day.
