i have a 7 groove pulley setup on my car the alt i had built at idle only puts out low 13's and im wanting to install a smaller pulley, only problem is that all the smaller ones are 6 groove.
my question is i got a 6 groove pulley and belt, will the belt work on my other pulleys?
i had a local shop tell me it would eat the belt since there would be nothing riding on the outside of the belt on the other pulleys..
plz help id like to change it but if its gonna eat the belt then thats a waist of money..

Listen to your local shop, the pulleys must match up exactly. Every accessory that spins needs to be matched up with the same grooves on the pulleys!!
It will eventually EAT the belt, yes..

You would be better off finding a 7 or 8 groove to fit your alt then changing over to a 6 groove. We have some very small 8 groove pulleys that were custom made. What type of vehicle are you working on? Feel free to can me at 1-866-446-8878 ext 102 Toll Free for details.

As long as you line the grooves up properly you can use a 6 groove belt on a 7 groove pulley with no problems.

in my past experiences, using different pulleys, will almost, allways shread the belt... I have did diffrent stuff, besides car audio, and not matchin pulleys is not what u want to do... And when u need ur belt the most, it will fail on you..
ive changed ac compressors, power steering pumps, alternators, harmonic balancers... the pulleys must match for things to work smoothley..

I am not saying you can't use the 6 groove belt on a 7groove pulley, but a 7 groove belt has more surface area and not as likely to slip. Theese cars went to a 6 groove in later models without any problems but a 7groove would still be cheap insurance. The big advantage in my mind would be that running a 7groove would allow you to run a smaller diameter pulley and still not slip the belt because the surface area contacting the belt would still be close to the same.
