Is anyone familiar with the charging system on a 93-98 GC? Its not actually the alternator thats malfunctioning, but the voltage regulator, which I've been told is built into the computer/ECM. I've also been told that its possible to connect a stand alone regulator to the alternator to avoid replacing the ECM which is quite expensive.
Has anyone heard of this and how to go about it?

Yes, you can connect an external regulator to your existing alternator or you can get an internally regulated alternator. If you are in the need for an alternator anyway, I would do the internally regulated alternator.

Wow, I didn't expect an answer from the alternator man himself, lol. I was planning on keeping my stock alternator for now because I'm a bit strapped for cash. I took it to an automotive electrical garage and they tested the alternator to be good, but said the computer was bad. An auto parts store said the same thing and that the regulator was built into the comp. I've read online that it was possible to bypass the comp and connect a stand alone regulator but they didn't go into any details.
The alternator has 4 wire connections from the wire harness not including the + wire to the battery. 2 of the connections are grounds and the other 2 are field connections (or so I've been told) lol.
Would you know exactly how to wire an external regulator to the 2 field connections? I'd like to connect this myself.

Offering to sell some spare parts that someone clearly could use is not soliciting in my mind. It's not like I sell ecm's everyday or anything I just happen to have one from an R&D project that I am done with.
