not all alternators are adjustable. For it to be adjustable, it must be externally regulated. The Ohio Generator one you had problems with was/ should have been externally regulated.
I think your problem may have happened because the guys installing it didnt turn it down.
At idle, it may have read 14.4 volts, when driving, and increased RPM, the volyage probabley went WAYYYYY up.
Not necessarily common, but to an inexperienced installer, it can be pretty easy to overlook.

I've heard different stories on alt. wiring. Used to be the big thing was "getting them rewound". Which meant having an alternator repair shop rewind the fine copper wiring in the alt. Adding more wraps was supposed to increase the voltage. I've also heard that changing the diodes in the alt was they way to increase voltage. I've also heard that the regulator is the key to the whole charging system. I would, buy a high output alt from , I think it's Ohio generator, and call it safe. Well that's if I had $300 to spend on the charging system.
