How many of you have replaced the ones that came with your speakers? What speakers do you have, and what replacement crossover did you use?

Is buying an active crossover like say an AudioControl as big a practice as it used to be? Will you gain a lot by doing so? What are the benefits?

Trying to figure out all the pieces, and was wondering if this was even something I should look into.

it depends on the spks. I would borrow a friends and see if it's worth the hassle with some spks. that have cheap x-overs yes, or if you want steeper slopes yes

One of the big reasons I ask is right now I am running BostonAcoustic 6.5 Pro's. When I crank it up, I don't get what seems like a normal distortion, but it seems like the 6.5 driver gets muddy, like it is trying to hit too much of the sound spectrum to do any of it crystal clear at that volume. I plan on throwing in the 4" driver (to make it like the 6.53 system they sell. So I would have tweet, 4", and 6.5". Well, at that point I have a decision to make, I can buy the stock crossover they sell with the 6.53 system, or I can go third party.

That being said, I don't have much experiance with crossovers. About 10 years ago, I had an AudioControl EQ that I just loved, so there is a name that I know. What is their repuation and quality like these days? How do they compare to other companies in quality and preformance? Who gives you the most for your money, etc?

I would put a high pass on the 6 1/2" at about 130Hz or so and it may define the midbass responce

hey spidermann i have a Q. would this be ok if i buy a pair of vifa tweeter's an a pair of DD5 midbass with a 4-ch amp, use all ch. 1st and 2nd ch. on the tweet's and 3rd and 4th ch. on the DD5, and not use a passive x-over just use the x-over from the amp. is the x-over on the amp's better than a passive x-over ( if you have a good amp already with a good x-over ).

If you have an amp with an xover that can be highpassed in the 3khz range and are willing to play the midrange until it rolls off naturally, then go for it. I'm not so sure as to how the DD5.0 rolls off though, there's a good chance it doesn't react like the 6W, which rolls off around 3500hz.

"I would put a high pass on the 6 1/2" at about 130Hz or so and it may define the midbass responce"

That's way too high...

just to clarify. The DD W6 and W5 midbass driver have no use for a xover, its all built into the design. This is why when you buy a DD component set you only get a high pass filter.

You can if you wanted to use the amplifiers xover or make a filter for the DD midbass but i don't think it would do much.

Im pretty sure the W5 rolls off at 3500hz just like the W6.

The quality of the amp xover depends on the quality of the components used inside the amplifier. But amplifier xovers are usually better as you can adjust the freq to suit your ears and thats what matters.
