just about every 5 min. I dont understand, its warm, but its not HOT. Its a BXI 1206d, wired 4 ohms on 4 gauge wire. Any help would be nice. I thought it was the remote wire getting jiggled loose, but that aint it. I guess ill check the ground and get another batt in there to loosen the load on my system.

Forgot to add that i can turn the deck off when it goes into protect and turn it back on, the amp turns on just fine. So im thinking its a wireing issue.

that 1200 watts cant have too much of a load on your electrical, that definitely should not be the problem. like he said, check voltage in rcas. definitely check your ground.

If it is going into protect, the amp is sensing a fault.
Don't keep putting it into protect or eventually it will fail and stay in protect.

Call Mike Stiers on Monday and he can help you determine the cause.

are you using 4 gauge ground wire also?

4 gauge all around, speaker is 8 gauge (my old power wire). I do have a multimeter so ill see if my RCAs are getting the full 5volt out from my Pioneer DEH5800MP.

As of now im sandpapering a new spot in my car for a new ground, instead of using existing screw holes, which i did not sand paper.

How do i check the RCA's? I unplugged them and ran the + and - from the meter and got a big fat goose egg for voltage...

Then i tried it while they were hooked up to the amp.

I guess i need to check the ones coming from the head unit before i go buy RCAs

each rca has a hot and a ground on it.

The actual pin is a hot and the outside shield is a ground, thats how you check voltage out of an rca

Hello Bob,
I would assume that you are clipping the amplifier. I don't think the issue is in the RCA Voltage, but rather in your settings. Feel free to call me at 847-540-7700 or email me at MikeS@Maxxsonics.com . Email is usually faster for me to reply to. [Wink]

Ok, that makes sense, let me turn the gains correctly (my old sub is dying so i didnt care if i smoked it, bad i know), bass boost etc and get back to you on that. Thanks again guys

RCAs are AC voltage, no hot or ground in AC. You would have to play a test tone to test AC voltage on your RCAs, polarity doesnt matter when testing.
Faults like this can also be on the load or output of the amp. Check your sub and the wiring and make sure there is no short. What is the impedence of the sub? If it is too low then the amp will go into protect.

i realize they are ac, but to complete the circuit you have to go from the "grounding shield" of the rca and go to the "hot pin" to get voltage out, i don't know much but I know this

I did what Mike said, and it didnt go into protect on my way to school, my work drive is much farther so well see...

There is no short on any connection, wiring is fine (except for my slightly long power wire). Only problem is the sub is so shot that with the gain not on near full its quiet. Ill live for a week though, I just cant wait for the Q.

And the sub is SVC 4 ohm, so its not low impedance.

Even if it is a svc 4 ohm if the coil is messed up it can mess with the imdedance.

I think its the sub, i turned the gains down, BB down, everything, and it sounded like POOOOOP. So bad, i knew it was on its way out so goodbye HF12S4.

Im going to hook my amp up on a Boston G2 and see if it protects tomorrow, wish me luck

Wait a minute.. So you have a "shot" sub hooked up and you're wondering why the amp is going into protect? [Confused]

Hey im still learning this. If that is the reason then lesson learned ^^. Tinsel leads arent shot or anything (yet), so i thought it would accept the power form the amp correctly, guess not.

Like I said, ill run it on a G2 and see what happens.

any weird spot in the length of a coil due to overheating etc can cause an amp to see strange ohm loads and overheat. especially during higher excursion times, maybe when its moving further and getting to a certain bad spot in a coil. ive even had coils read just fine, until it played loud, then it would read really crazy, driving the amp into protect. definitely pull the sub out and meter the leads on the coil. if its single 4 ohm, it will read something other than 4, and its messed up. if its not stable when you read it, its messed up.

I installed the SSD and its still doing it. Can someone give me an idea of how to hook up an ohm meter on dvc sub to see its load on the amp?

Mike im gettin ready to call you if i cant figure this out by wednesday.
