I guess it isn't to terrible, but for three 12's it aint good enough. I hit 148.2 on the dash with an audiocontrol. My 3 12W6's are firing torwards the rear of my car, and I removed my backseat and cut two JL symbols in the sheat metal. The carpeted it and used mesh behind that.

But anyways, they are in a sealed box 1.1 cubes each. I know you are all gonna tell me to port it but will it lose SQ too??

If you port the box you have now, you will lose SQ,but if you rebuild it larger, and port it correctly, you will still have excellent SQ, along with picking up a few DBs

Dude

148's with that setup is a great score !!!

I would say that you are reaching the limits of that enclosure . In theory , porting would increase your score . But it will affect the SQ - whether or not it will sound worse is something only you can decide .

Unless you are going all-out SPL then there is always going to be a compromise . At what point you compromise is what you have to decide . Personally , I've heard 12W6's sound superb with 2 cu ft ported each - do you have that much room ??

I don't know if this will have been the answer you were looking for , but quite honestly I'd be v. happy with that score

Heck with that setup I would be pretty happy. That seems like a very respectable score.

As far as porting it and the loosing of SQ. Well if its ported right or the ports are adjustable but can get a VERY good response from them. Tune them higher for a show for spl and then WAY lower for normal use...

Good score.

Unfortunately, yes you will lose SQ regardless of what ported box you put those subs in.

Yes, it's also true that only you can decide if the amout of SQ (However small it may be)
you will lose will be acceptable to your ears.

Porting those subs WILL be a compromise between SQ and SPL. (You must give something to get something.)

Your complaining!!!! very respectible score. It is not the loudest but I would be willing to be it is one of the best sounding near 150's out there. I have always found W6 to sound VERY nice sealed. But still the SPL in me says PORT IT!!! Make that box bigger and hit that port tune to 40 Hz and you will gain 3-4 dBs easy from those woofers. Just an idea..take it for what it is.

Thanks !! 156.4 this year.

It could probably be higher but I'm my own worst enemy - I like listening to it too much before the comp

Bassin,

I'm running an A7HC @ 1 ohm.
I know that the JL's ain't SPL subs but they hit pretty hard and real tight. But then again it is in a sealed enclosure. I'm starting to consider porting my box, but I might wait. My biggest thing is that I want to compete next year, but I wouldn't be competitive in the SS 3-4 class. Any suggestions?

I'd like to be able to change, but I don't have that much money to just buy new subs and amps.

I think I'll wait on the W7's to come out, unless He!! freezes first.

If your subs are in the trunk, I would step down to street 1-2 if they still have it.

Yea, wait till the new rules come out and goto street 3-4 with that amp and port your box. If you are getting those numbers with a sealed box you should be able to get close if not over 150 with a ported box. 150db in street 3-4 is VERY competitive. I run sealed boxes in my mustang only because I dont have the room to port my HX2s.

How is it a foregone conclusion that you will "Lose SQ" with a ported box?

My Thoughts EXACTLY!!!!

Pi$$es me off to no end. I'll put up any ported box I make against any sealed box in an SQ head to head. I guess greater sensitivity and deeper extension are bad things?

I am with Dukk and the others. I would put a properly designed (key words) ported box to a sealed box any day. Not taking one of then $79.95 prefab one size fits all boxes on sale boxes from some stores...

That's what it sounds like I'm gonna do. I just have to find room for a 6 cu ft box in my trunk that is no mor than 38" wide. I'll use the JL flex ports and run them up to my rear deck. That should help get the pressure in the cabin better.

Still the box is gonna be huge, Don't know if it will fit......
