Ok, while i was browsing termpro i noticed that the knowledgable posts have dropped down significantly, and I would like to start bringing back the knowledgable posts to this forum... so newbies can learn and also people who have been in car audio for years can share ideas/comments and or suggestions.... so here we go.. lets make this the first post of many. Lets start all of the subjects with
-- Knowledge Post -- so that an easy search can find them..

Ways to increase sound pressure level (SPL)
Please put the way and then the increase, in DBs that it usually adds... here is all i know

3 DBs-- Doubling the power to the subwoofer
3 DBs-- Doubling the number of subwoofers
1.5- 3 DBs-- Adding Dynamat type material to your trunk

well, i have only a few posts in this forum, but in others, its higher, ive been competiting for a while now. ive done all the power things i can do to increase spl. changing tracks. 1 db up, adding dynamat, 1 db up. letting engine hood up to keep alternator cool during summer. 1 db up.from 136 to 139 in one month. then i decided to tape off my air vents. gained 1 db. im now 140 db legal with trunk subs.

Dynomat didn't help me at all, but it made it sound better if that even matters!

can u say burp, this has brought my spl up 10 db in one year, well I guess going from one 18 to 4 15's also helped. But burping saves the batteries juice, and helps keep components cooler. Burping also allows higher power handling for the short bursts.

BIG BIG THINGS....

Know what freq that you do best at. Burp it there. Other sweeps and what not can heat up equipment and kill voltage and neither are good for big numbers.

Also a good solid box/install is key. Build crap and you will get crap for numbers.

About dynomat. Unless you used so much of it that it build out the doors or trunk or make it like a rock..(that would cost $$ BTW) then the chances of it making it louder on a meter is nill. Sure it might sound louder but literally READ louder...I doubt it.

Also tuning the box to work with the car can increase the spl quite a good deal. You cant throw a prefab box or other box not built for JUST that car and woofer combo and expect to get all you could...

I thought doubling subs was a 6db gain?

If you double the cone area and keep total power the same you gain 3dB (in theory).
If you double total power and keep cone area the same you gain 3dB (in theory).
If you add another sub with the same power as the first you gain 6dB.

Allrighty, I'll share a little info.
1. Use a test or competition CD
2. Take the dashmat off!
3. A cheap dB meter from Radio shack may not tell your true spl, but it will tell you when there are changes. ie, searching for resonant frequency, trying different boxes or ports or whatever.

Rob Base,... if you were competeing stock, how were you able to tape your vents?

I have soooo much to say bout what i have witnessed this year but i cant until finals is over and after that i still dont know if i can release some of the info.

to the taping up the vents... wayne has declared this legal in the street class... go into the db drag related questions and do a search for "taping vents" and the post will come up.

One thing i can say is: I have seen some pre-fab boxes work this year great! You wont see me with one cause i know it wont work for me with my luck!

Ok, just cause I'm a wanker like this- it is Dynamat with an "a", not Dynomat with an "o."

I believe that adding a second woofer the same size adds 6dB because of mutual coupling. they have to be close to eachother though.

the only reason Dynamat "sounds" louder is because it eliminates the rattling and resonances that color the sound and distract your ear...
