In case anyone may find this interesting(probably no one but me) It looks like the Tarantula may yet make it to the market..? I was on their web page and on the index screen there is this big honkin' picture of the Tarantula with the caption "Coming in the Summer of 99".. I remember my Soundstream dealer-buddy saying they were trying to work out the bugs about a year ago, maybe they won't balk this time...

Hey Dr. Thunder, do you have a bigger pic. That one is kinda tiny!

I just saw a Lil Wonder the other day. All, I can say is it ain't all that little (RF 100a2 sizewith no end caps) and puts out similar power. I think the 'wonder' is why anyone would buy one!! The guy who had it (actually has 2) said they were for sale........

According to a dealer/buddy of mine in St.Louis, they were re-organized, however, no one actually bought them out. Same people own them. The tarantula was one of the reasons they started going downhill, and they did need the time to get bugs worked out. I still think that thing is gonna suck, 2000x1 at 4 ohms, 2000x1 at 2 ohms... class A. I talked to him about them making a class D and he said why would anyone want that sloppy of bass? I said because you can build a class D cheaper, and they're more efficient, plus you wouldnt' need to carry a nuclear reactor to power a 2000 watt class D... Anyway, thats what I know. He is patiently waiting the arrival of his Tarantula.

What would the current draw for 2000 class A watts be? If they're that inefficient I don't think they're going to be very popular for db draggers

That Tarantula is gonna need 3 Mile to power it! I like how they cover their collective butts by making the amp impedance sensitive (isn't that what led to all their problems in the first place) and then act like it's a benefit!!
Typical SS....

I seriously doubt the tarantula is a pure clas A amp. A true class A amp is normally around 25-30% efficient which works out to around 550 Amps at 14.4V. If it were it would make about 6000 watts of waste heat, be a damn pretty heater though

I'm sorry if I created some confusion. Soundstream labels they're class "AB" amps as class "A" because they think they sound as good as class a's, however, as we are all aware, they are a true class "AB". Yep, I think it's funny how they fudge the numbers. This buddy of mine thinks that's the greatest thing. He thinks its better to get the same power out of a 2 ohm load as compared to 4, and you cant explain to him that you actually half the total power to 2 4 ohm subs that way.... He doesn't get it, but then again, he's a soundstream fanatic...

So the rumor of SS being purchased by MTX is/was false? I've heard their old Granite amps, they were very solid....but then again, the dude wasn't running it hard.....*sigh*

Audiophyle, (As one of the SS fanatics)I have never heard that the SS class A amps were actually AB. I know a trait of class A is to run very hot, which mine did at a 1 ohm(mono) load. I have a friend with a REF 500 at 1 ohm (mono) and it ran much cooler than my 10.0 did. Actually my 10.0 got hot enought to have a cookout on but it never shut down, went into protection, or had any other problems. Sorry, I was just wondering, as I have never heard anyone else say that the SS class A amps weren't class A after all.

Audiophyle, maybe the reason your buddy doesn't understand these things is all the magic smoke he breathes. Just kidding, I actually used and liked some of their amps for awhile and a buddy uses three of them with no problems. As for the Class A in the names of SS amps I heard once that this is because the circuitry in all gain stages preceding the output transistors is class A. I don't know how true this is, or if anybody does it any other way. Maybe tech or someone else can enlighten me?

I have heard that they run the front end class A as well, whatever the hell that means.... Sorry Buzz, the only actual true pure absolutely class A car amp I ever heard of was the Pioneer ODR 15Wx2. The SS are AB, just like 95% of the rest...

If it were true class A front to rear you wouldn't have to have it at 1 ohm mono to get it hot. Just having it on would get it good and hot in a matter of minutes. If I recall they are a quasi class A, like so many others that claim class A. The finals are configured in a more conventional A/B level of bias arrangement. If any of you have experience with true Class A home stuff you know what I mean !
