Me and a couple of friends were having a discussion today about Db's, and I was wondering if you guys could give some opinions here. We decided (for no real apparant or scientific reason), when you double your power, you gain 3Db's, when you double your woofer area, you gain 1.5Db's, when you do both, you gain 4.5Db's. To actually hear a "doubling" of loudness in the car, it takes 9Db. Can anyone help us out here and give the REAL answers to these questions:

1) How many Db's do you gain when you double your poewr?.

2) How many Db's do you gain when you double your Air movement (cone area).

3) How many Db's do you gain when you double your power, and double your cone area?.

4) How many Db change would it take to notice (hear) an actual doubling in output?. i.e. make the stereo twice as loud?.

Thanks.

TrancE

Theoretically in order to gain 3dB's you have to double your cone area or double your power. But there are other things to take into consideration such as cabin mods. And 3dB's is really not that noticeable to the human ear. I takes more like 10 dB's for the human ear to percieve it as twice as loud.
Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

I believe it is 9 dB to be audibly twice as loud.
Double Power: 3 dB
Double Cone Area: 3 dB

All in theory - practice may be different for each case

Like was already said...In Theory:

2x the power = 3db up
2x the subs at the same power = 3db up
2x cone and 2x power = 6db up
To actually sound 2x as loud 10db. ( or was it 9db same diff)

But also like was said there is alot more that can affect that. Just open a door in a sealed car and the spl will change. But none of the above did. So there is ALOT more then power and cone area alone that can affect SPL. Also all 150's dont feel/sound the same. 150 at 119 hz is VEY different the 150 at say 42 hz....

In reality:

2xpower = up to 3 (usually more like 2)
2xdrivers (NOT CONE AREA) = 3
