I bought a shocker2 12 and while its in the mail I am pondering some enclosure designs. AT's old site says 2.7 cubes tuned to something like 43hz. To me, that seems like a terrible enclosure for listening to music. That sounds like a one hertz wonder box. Does anyone recommend an enclosure that is optimized for SPL but can still sound ok with music? Is their design really what is best?

Use a box that is 3.3cuft before displacement with a 50sq in vent...I have mine tuned at 40hz and it sounds good!

3.3 before port and sub displacement tuned to 40 Hz with a 50sq in port requires a port atleast 24" long. Even if the box is NET 3.3 after port and sub displacement using a 50 sq in port and tuning to 40 Hz the port is 19.5" long.

are you sure in a box that small you have ports that long??

I suggest using a 50 sq in port 12" long and tune to 48Hz for SPL and use a port plug to drop the port down to 20 sq inches and tune to 32 hz for daily driving.

Yeah, it's supposed to be. the shockers are designed for SPL not SQ. I have three of the 15's in my car in a wall and listen to them everyday with music. They don't sound horrible (tuned to 40Hz) but i wouldn't enter any SQ comps with them.

Download WinISD (freeware box design program) and enter the T/S parameters for the shocker12 into it's database and play around with some enclosures. But remember, this is the out-of-car response, it will change when you put it in the car due to the transfer function of the vehicle. How much it will change will vary from vehicle to vehicle.

Another thing to consider is that when using a slot port, you add 1/2 of the width of the port to the length to get the true tuning...thus a shorter port will tune lower...

Also, like it or hate it, you will find that if you tune an x-treme to 40-45 hz they will play VERY well down to 30-35 hz...I don't care what the specs say and I don't care what the programs tell you, build the box and try it for yourself!

NO, our designs were not intended for SQ contests, but MOST bassheads LOVE the way they sound in our suggested enclosures while playing music!

One of my favorite lines is when someone says that their sub can play 6hz or 19hz or something stupid like that...remember, the average human can not hear below 20hz so what you hear when you play those frequencies is your car shaking! There is absolutely no pressure and no bass that carries from these frequencies...In fact, anything below 30 hz is kind of pointless! I have been hearing more and more lately about this guy did this or that guy did that at this low frequency, but......

some things to consider...
Movie theaters, dance halls, concerts, and mobile dJ's typically don't play anything below 40 hz so if you enjoy the bass at any of those events odds are you won't miss 20 hz! Just some food for thought there...I always find it funny when people brag about being tuned to 20 hz, gets me rolling every time!

I say tune your box somewhere betweem 35-45hz. I've had my mouse in both a box tuned to 37 and a box tuned to 47...and it sounded great in both, jus a little louder in the higher tuned box and better sq in the lower tuned box. I'm not sure about the shocker 2's though.
