I purchased the PG Bass cube b/c I have 2 12" L7's in a vented box and wanted a subsonic filter so I wont damage my subs. I hooked it up and all the lights go on. One on the unit and one on the remote. According to the manual, it says for vented boxes I should set the subsonic filter to tracking and the variable Q to High. I did this and set the frequecy a little above my box tuning frequency. Well, it is suppose to have up to 15 db of bass boost and I can turn the knob back and forth all the way with out hearing much difference. Is there anyway to tell if it is working properly? Did I do something wrong? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You may have the frequency too low to tell a difference. Put the small knob a little before half-way. This is about 65 hz, If you don't notice a difference, then something is probalby wrong. If you have it all the way to the left it only boosts at 20hz probalby way to low for most ported systems, especially with the narrow Q setting.

Thanx for the reply. If I set the smaller knob to around 65 hz then wont I be losing all of the frequencies below that? I thought that wherever your boosting, that is also where the subsonic filter is cutting out? Am I wrong on this? Please help since I guess I dont understand the whole "tracking" part of the subsonic filter. I know its 18 db/octave but what does that mean as far as hz. Where should I have the knob if my box is tuned to 38 hz? Please help as it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

What I am gona do is stick the Subsonic on fixed. I am gona put my frequency at about 45 Hertz and stick the Q on Wide, all done. I know all those setting work because I owned many a PPI '98 PC series amp ith a Q bass and it would always soudn better and fuller with the Q at wide, it gave a much heavier boost with the knob because it is affecting a wider range of frequencies. The subsonic at fixed is fine especially with good subs you are using you will be fine. Just try what I said and let me know how it sounds I promise it will be good even though I havent tried it yet Posts: 841 | From: Pennsylvania | Registered: Feb 2002

OK, now I have a few more things to add. I went out and bought the Bass Mechaniks Vol 5 cd. With the subsonic filter on tracking and the frequecy knob around 50-65 hz. I played test tones in the 30 hz range and I could hear the bass playing. This bothers me since my box is tuned to 38 hz. Why is it playing that test tone? Shouldnt the subsonic filter get rid of that frequency? What the hell, now I'm scared I'm going to be damaging the subs. Why wont the tracking filter work? I dont want to put the fixed filter on b/c its set at 25 hz and is too low since my box is tuned to 38. What should I do? Also, the boost knob practically does nothing, I mean I can hear a little difference but not as much as I was expecting. I mean its suppose to be up to 15 db of bass boost and I can barely notice a difference. Does anybody have some insight to the problems I'm experiencing? Please help.

You are making me want to pull out my Cube and hook it up because your gettin me worried now. I am expecting the Cube to boost and control the bass like the PPI Q bass would and htat was I beleive 12 dB boost. What I want to do is leave my gains down low so that the bass is almost nonexistant untill you turn up the Cube. Is your Cube new, I have one wrapped new but has been sitting for 2 years I have not used it yet. I do not have subs either with which to try it. I am going to get somebody to let me hook it up in their car to see what this is all about. Either something is wrong with your cube (i HATE when equipment is defective) or the cube isnt what we think. I have heard lots about it though I also know someoen who hates it. But even he siad it is like the LPL control that plugged into the PG amps. That woudl take you to almost no volume but thats a rheostat not a boost. Anyways can somebody who has one already describe the difference it gives/ how it operates/results please?

Yes I have pulled out the knob, I understand how it is theoretically supose to work. I dunno, I heard so much about this damn thing so I bought it, and unless I'm missing something or it's defective, this thing isnt that great at all. I've used remote bass knobs before on my old MTX amps and the amount of bass that changes with that is sooooo much more dramatic than this bass cube. I just dont hear a big difference at all. I really am starting to think its defective but everything seems like it works, i.e. lights turn on, but nothing much happens. The thing that scares is me that I bought this mainly for the subsonic filter and when I played the test tones below my tuning frequency, it still played. I thought it would cut them out and now I'm hoping I'm not damaging anything and there's no real way I can tell, not that I can think of anyway.

You know that you can remove the top cover of the cube and there's a couple of adjustments inside, right? There should be a small potentiometer in the middle of the cube that adjusts the total possible gain. At max, and default setting, it should give +15 dB when you crank the remote knob. At minimum it will only boost by +3. Possibly the previous owner set it at minimum?
It's recommended that you set the gains low on your amp, and use the Bass Cube to boost the bass. If you have the gains turned up on your amp, and you try to boost the signal another 15 dB, you're gonna clip the hell outta the amp. Speaking of, does anyone know where I can get a spare remote? My local dealer wants to charge $68 + tax for one... so let me know.

(this is Mike82 so i can talk to the audio god) Not sure man, I know, the remtoes are rediculous priced just like the Phoenix LPL knob and PPI QBass. AT least the PG remote has frequency on it though so its probabaly kind worth it even though they are really rippen$$$

Become mates with someone who works for PG, or find a nicer dealer
As said the unit has an internal pot that sets up how much you can adjust the boost. Be careful with this though as 15dB boost or so is asking a LOT of any amp.
Subsonic filters aren't brick wall, which is why you hear the frequencies below what it is set to.
