I have a pretty wimpy head unit. it puts out just about 2volts, would a line driver help me increase dynamic range and overall volume of the system?? It seems cheaper than buying a new head unit.

Dukk I'd have to disagree in certain cituations... (but in most you are correct) Some amplifiers require quite a bit of voltage to achieve full power. eg.. I have a pioneer DEH-P815 nice older head unit.. BUT only 0.5V preouts running an ads power plate 240 and a phoenix gold xs2500. Well to have enough gain to have the mid/tweets at a nice listening volume the gain on the ads was fairly high, and the gain on the xs was max (just because of lack of signal) I threw in my line driver and was able to turn the gain on the ads ALL the way down, and the xs to about 1/4-1/3 giving a better ratio of highs to bass, and getting my system considerably louder. While this is not true of every system it will help some. since you have 2V (while not alot you have 4 times as much signal as I do) The best thing I can recomend is find a friend or stereo shop who might let you test one in your car. If it makes a noticabl diff.. go buy one.. if not don't bother. But like Dukk said, in most cases it will improve your noise floor. If you have anymore questions on line drivers ask away.. (I build them)

The only way a line driver might help your system greatly is if your running many amps (more than 2-3) and the output impedance of your deck is high.. but the best thing to do is find one to test with.. every system is different, it might help yours.. it might not..

I think that he should go to his shop hook up a LD with higher output voltage and if it makes a difference then there is the problem if not then he needs to do something else
