How kind of effect does the output voltage of the preamp outputs have on the music? Does a higher or lower voltage give you better sound quality or a higher SPL? Thank you.

Head Unit RCA Volts to me, give amps a little more extra boom to them. Thats because of the stronger music signal from the head unit. Although RCA Voltage is not a bass boost, which some people think it is, it is just to get better overall sound from the front of the car to the rear. Too much RCA Voltage can cause the amp to actually overheat and go into Protection mode. Line Drivers are one way that can happen. IF the head unit has more then 4.5 Volts per RCA, then you should be fine for what ever system you are planning. Hope this helps.

A higher voltage in your RCA allows for better noise rejection from near by fields. Any electroinc device(ie anything with a current though it) produces an electric field. This field can induct a voltage/current into near by circuits therefore creating noise in you system. You may note that Home systems have a lower average voltage for RCAs (usually under 1Volt). This is because house appliances are using high voltage/low current power supplies, so all electric fields are relatively low in a home environment where as a car is a low voltage/high current environment. Therefore my answer to your question is that yes having a higher input voltage from your preamp can only aid in better SQ and possibly SPL.
