I can get both, brand new, for around the same price. Which one should I get? Which is the "badder" unit?

It depends on the features and performance that you are looking for. I would weigh out the diferences between the two and figure out the pros and cons of each, for instance, the Alpine has a rotary knob the Kenwood does not, the Kenwood has a touch screen which can be bad and good.
Things like this may affect the unit you purchase , but you will feel alot more secure about your decision.

The most obvious advantage the KVT has over the IVA is that it has a built-in DVD, whereas the Alpine only takes standard CD's: http://www.kenwoodusa.com/product/product.jsp?productTypeId=37&productId=2344 On the other hand, the Alpine has a sharper screen and is fully motorized. Good luck getting ahold of the Kenwood though... around here, they sell out as soon as they come in - people were actually bidding money on top of the retail price ($2400 at Sound Advice) to get one. It seems that Kenwood can't even come close to producing enough for the demand.

I love my IVA-C800! I'm using it with the MDA-5048 & 2 changers. Haven't seen the Kenwood firsthand so no opinion on it.

Actually I have no problem playing burned cds on my IVA-C800. It even displays the CD text if I copy a cd with the text. Not having DVD capability isn't a prob for me either. I have a portable I use with it.

oops! I guess I didn't catch you were talking about the DVA not playing burned cds. Neither DVA units will play burned cds? or just the older model?
