I used to own a 89 silverado standard cab full size pickup and while driving one afternoon with my sterio cranked again doing 60mph down the road , i started hearing a screech from my motor . being less than a mile from home i figured it wsas just a loose fanbelt and would tighten it when i got back home . Well the closer i got to my house the louder it got , then i stated smelling really toxic fumes . i also noticed my voltage guage was dropping so again though my belt was just coming off and since i was now just feet from home didnt stop till i got there. when i pulled in my driveway i had smoke billowing from under the hood . so i popped the hood and was shocked to see my alternator was altually on fire . YES , metal does burn . it had gotten so hot that it had turned to liquid metal and started throwing chuncks of my alt around under the hood . my alternator had partially melted from the intense heat. i sold that truck shortly after .

Probably a failed front bushing. Extremely common problem on those trucks (and my Lumina Z34 incidentally). Chevy built them like that for about 5 years and won't admit fault and issue any sort of recall. I've replaced 3 alts in my Z34 and it is bone stock!
Did I ever mention my 'love' of Chevrolet.....
