This didn't happen to me, but the Griz was telling me the tale of an old Hifonics amp that had seen it share of acion. I saw rust on the heatsink and asked how the rust got there...he laughed and told me that the jackball that used to own the amp would put bags of ice on the amp when it got hot.....LOL...on night when he was at the bar he forgat to take the ice off and the spare tire well where the amp was placed filled with water.....the unsuspecting retard came out of the bar and cranked it up........POP.....LOL.....ice bags....what a jack ass.....and that my friends is the story of the Ice Bag Jack ASS........ I'm sure everyone (even if they won't admit it) has thought of this. I thought it would be cool to have some sort of liquid cooling system that used pipes (transparent would be cool) routed through the heatsinks and out to a small pump and a radiator which has cool air blowing through it. You could use some funky colour of coolant and it would look pretty impressive.

Inno, will PPI used to have liquid cooled amps, and the guys at Audio Unlimited did what you thought of to Brantley Miller's Trans Am. They also built collars for the speaker magnets and have them liquid cooled as well. If you haven't seen or heard about his car go to www.audiounlimited.com and check it out.

It is really cool. They used dental equipment for the fittings. The car won Iasca Pro 301-600 for a couple of years, but didn't do so well this year in the Expert class. You have seen the car in Stinger adds, it is a green new body style Trans Am, maybe MTX adds as well. The article is reprinted on the website.

At my first show it was a 2 day indoor event where the first day was boom and play while the real show was Sunday. Anyhoo, my old Alpine 4 channel was having a minor problem with heat due to the 2 MTX Terminator 15s on it so I grabbed a bucket, scrawled "Intercooler" on it and placed it on the heat sink. Worked and got a few interesting comments!
(oh, and I won on Sunday!)

I take back what I said about Dukk. I think I made a reference to me not being as technically adept as him and Tech man...Well after that post Hmm..lol...
what about this one... Get a small fridge and drill holes in the side and used gromets and what not and put the amps in there. heeh..

He he he, that's funny. What about an amp in a fishtank? Fishman????? If you used pure H2o it wouldn't short anything out. There's a TV in the Ontario Science Centre that is running entirely immersed in some sort of non-conductive liquid. Can't remember what. At least it was there in '92. I was tempted to dump a handful of salt in the liquid and see what happened.

About the problem of cooling amps, one time I had this Sony 25x4 (ooooooh what a lame amp) that I managed to make run hot. I took off the bottom plate, and drilled a whole buncha holes in it, and then used twisty ties to hold on 2 cooling fans, which I set to blow into the amp, and I wired the fans to the amp 12 volt so they'd be on whenever the amp was on. It worked great! The amps were always cooler than surrounding surfaces. The only problem was that after a while dust would build up in the amp, so I had to use the computer anti-static spray and clean it out.

There is a guy in my area with 3 JL 12w6's and a PPI 2140 pushing them. He had a custom case built for his amps that is freeon cooled. Hits 155.

Some computer repair companies use liquid ozone to clean the insides of computers. You can dip the whole thing while it is running because liquid O3 is conductive.

Hey that non conductive liquid is called flourine, but it would have to be circulated or it'd still cook your amp... Posts: 1408 | From: Stacyville, IA, USA | Registered: Jan 2000

mineral oil. non-conductive and very low freezing point. saw a guy who mounted his computer systemboard and most components (not power supply or drives) inside a styrofoam cooler filled with mineral oil and sat a cooling core from one of those mini-fridges in it. kept the systemboard and processor below zero degrees so he could overclock it over a gigahertz. heheh...now if you could just do the same with amps. i want my mmats to put out 12,000 watts at 0degrees. heheh.
