Ok The first install I ever did that I would consider an install went like this. I had an 8 gauge powerwire run through the door, along the sill plate (along not under) and into the trunk. No fuse. There I had a 400w soundstorm (not sound stream) amp that I picked up for $25 hooked up to it. The ground was some doubled up speakerwire that I connected to a nut. I ran the thing off m rear speakers and an invertor. This was connected to a folded horn enclosure with 2 8" RF DVC subs that were last years model. The system hit pretty good like that. I brought it over to the shop I got the subs at and showed it to them. They had no clue what it was, then I played it. My 2 8" and my 400w(peak)amp was out hitting their cars. I thought it was hilarious.

A few months after that I compeated in my first car audio even. It was a meca compition and the only other comp was a guy that had spent $2000 on his system. I ended up winning with a 134.9. When I told him that my whole system only cost me $300 he was pissed. He went right in to the store that was holding the comp and asked about getting a new system.

Remember its not how ghetto the gear is it's how you use it.

P.S. on a side note I put a decent amp on those subs and was easily in the high 140's.

mmm my first system was 2 8" mtx terminators (old old model) with 2 little horn tweeters in 2 separete truck boxes. I hooked both of those up with a house reciever in the backseat and the 2 subs in the backseat facing up and a ac/dc inverter [Big Grin] however when a really good bass song came up and i turned the amp to high it shut off :\

I have seen many crazy installs but two of the best begin with a guy that last I heard was working for Auto Audio in Little Rock as an installer. This guy Wes had to show me his setup and said that it was louder than what I was running so I took a look. There was an new at the time Hercules mono amp hanging from the dash pushing two kicker comp 12's. It did sound good but not as good as my 2 Punch 10's and Clarion APA2100 with a Punch 2X crossover.

My 2nd install is more like a test of a good amp. I was going out of town and a friend of mine had blown his two MTX 12's so I loaned him my Solobass alpine 10's and Kenwood 100 watt mono I think the model was a 720 anyway I get back and find out that he has my two solobass 10 along with two DVC vegas all parallel into this little Kenwood. Do the math 4+4+4+4+4+4=one hell of a load. The little amp took it and I never had any problems with it. I did slap the crap out of my friend.

sorry, my english is not very well...
I'll try to do better [Roll Eyes]
OK I said that my friend buyed a small sub but put 18 ga wire all around.
Also, to ground the amplifier he used a 18 ga wire and taped (w/ scotch tape) it over the body paint!
He was wondering why it's wasn't working...

My little story goes like this.

I had met this guy who was into VW beetles (he had a 68’) and was going to start working on a system and heard thru the grapevine I could help. Well he invites me over and I almost fell over when I got there. He had taken apart one of those Jensen 8" bass tubes (cheap Bazooka knock-off) and had it wired to a "600"watt Jensen amp... the worst part of it all was that he had built a box for it him self.... but it only had four sides. top/bottom/front/back... that’s it... and he was confused as to why the bass sucked and the lights were dimming... I fixed him up with a 15" RF in a sealed box with two Kicker Impulse 6*9’s all behind the back set wired to a 50w*2 Kenwood amp (KAC-626). After my little contribution…
The bass… was there
The Highs were crisp
The lights didn’t fade with the bass…

Then he wrecked the car….
The End

The funniest thing The Dude ever saw was at a local competition at a store in Arkansas. A guy pulled up with a small Chevy car(can't remember what kind) on a trailer. He unloads it hooks it up to a battery charger. There were about 20-30 cars competing, so it was a fair sized turnout. Word gets out that he has something like 24 12"s in the car. It was during the summer so it was quite warm. Most people were inside as most had made their runs and they were doing reruns and late entries. So, the guy pulls up to the line and the store empties, customers and employees alike. He has a huge crowd around. The guy has some supercheap head unit and eq duck taped together. He has rcas run under the hood and hooks the head unit directly to the battery. He proceeds to working and adjusting for about 5 minutes and signals he is ready. Did something like a 132. People are leaving the parking lot like roaches when the light is turned on. A friend of The Dude's went and looked at the setup and he told The Dude that the guy did indeed have 24 12"s. Problem was they were in a common chamber and they were of various brands and all in an advanced state of decay. Dust caps were missing along with parts of surrounds. The Dude and his friends still have fun with that story.

A funny install you say?? My cousins must have done one of the worst installs ever. He Lives out in ID and when I went to visit he was all like OOO look at my system. It included a Tape deck from radio shack and the 6" "sub" combos from a Farmer jack. it sounded ok for what it was….. [Roll Eyes] But Later on driving that night there was a nice Orange Glow coming for his feet. He had the power wire hooked up with 22 gauge. It burnt the whole 14 foot length and started the floor board by his foot on fire. His car was smoking and nothing worked. Now that I think back on it, It was one of the stupidest things I have ever seen any one do.

those are all great stories. One small one i have is of a guy that came from a local store. He had 2 pioneer impp 12's and a baja amp. At the time i didn't know much about car audio and thought it was pretty good. I was looking for a system and consideres his. Well for the next few weeks, he bragged to me how they would blow out the back winshield. I was like damn. Well, when he finally showed me the system. the amp was cheaply screwed to the rear seat floorboard covered up with a floormat, and looked extremely trash. All this by the way were in a 1980's or so maxima rusted, POS. Anyway we was bumping eminem and when he drove away, you couldn't hear him from 10 feet away.
I was like...ummm...im embarrased!

I think I might have a little story. I work with a fellow young guy who drives his Mazda everyday. I soon got to know him a lil' more and found out that he spent 3K on an all out Sony Explod system...I'm thinkin' thats sad. Anyway, later on, he was tryin to figure out a way to increase his bass. He was complaining about the bass, which consisted of 2 12's, Explods, of course in a bandpass Obcon box, and a Xplod amp pusin them, since he had the box in the trunk and wanted more. I said to him, cut a few holes in the back deck area so that the low end can "breathe". That said, he thought it was just a joke...like I didn't know what I was talkin about. Well, days perhaps a few weeks went by and one day I was being followed out to his car to reveal a shirt/sweater that was hanging over parcially over his lower back seat. He peeled the shirt away to reveal a trim panel made from MDF and what I saw was so funny....he cut a 8x8 or 10x10 hole in the back seat!! Why on earth would he do that??!! Not only that but he has a shirt to cover this so called port...thats the funny part...I guess so that his port doesn't get stolen. Just recently, he started an apprenticeship program at a local car audio shop. I hope to hell they teach him not to cut holes in the back seats let alone the customers cars.

I had a kid call and tell me that his cap isnt working. He agreed to the $60/hr labor to get it up and running.

Kid came in...

I was looking at it...he had the power/ground straight into the amp...He had the resistor that comes with the cap to charge it in series with eh power/ground.

I still have the wonder wire here at work. Maybe Ill take a pic. Heheh...Was quite amusing.

I am sad to report this b/c of how much I love my Porsche 928, but some idiot who owned the car long before me decided to do his own installation. He (I am assuming it was a he) was stupid b/c a car like that should never, ever, ever be taken anywhere for an installation other than a really great shop with experience in foreign cars.
Anyway, he decided he needed some better speakers in the doors and in the rear that sounded better than what came from the factory. Given the car is an '82 model, that is a fair request. However, he decided to go with some cheap Alpine 4" speakers for the doors and some no-name (as in we can't find them in the car) 6x9's for the rears. In order to get the magnets of the 4's to fit in the factory location, the guy had to take a sawsall to the metal door structure. He didn't cut the hole big enough, so there was no way for him to mount the speakers to the door, so he just duct taped the speaker to the inside of the leather-covered fiberboard door panel (which costs $1400 to replace) and set the magnet in the hole! Unfortunately, this wasn't the worst part! [Frown] Instead of positioning the 6x9's in the factory location (between the front and rear seats), the moron cut holes in the wheel well panels (which are also leather-covered and expensive to replace), dropped the 6x9's in and covered the holes with black plastic rectangular grills. It should be noted that the interior of my Porsche is brown and tan leather, so black is the last choice for a grill. Should I win the lottery, I will replace the wheel well panels, but for now, I'm just looking for better front speakers that will fit.

This isnt an install I did, rather one I saw while looking to buy a car.

This one guy had a 91 Caprice, the old cop car package and everything. It wasnt in bad shape at all and had all digital everything. Well when I cranked it there some boom boom I heard. He had a Pioneer Premier cd player (one of the good ones) so I figure maybe he has some killer boom also.

He pops the trunk [Eek!]

The carpet is ALL gone, leaving the frame of the car, and he had 2x4's, sheets of mdf and some other wood that made a floor. He had 2 Pioneer IMPP 15's (gray ones) in a BIG sealed box and a '2400w' SPL amp that had 8 guage pwr and grnd. One of the Pioneers had the little silver dustcap removed and had a massive crack in the cone. The other one had like 3/4 of the cone left on it and like half the surround was off.

Now I wasnt buying the system so I didnt care, so I drove the car. He bumped it and even after seeing how it looked, I was thoroughly suprised that it didnt sound like pure s***. Somehow, someway it sounded alot better than it should have. If you open the trunk when it bumps all you hear is weird crackling and popping sounds that you CANNOT HEAR INSIDE THE CAR.

I still dont get it at all.

I have a funny story, not an instll sorry.I used to have 2 12 SoloBaric the Circle ones in a sealed box in my '95 4dr Civic. They were really loud, but not deep like i wanted. So i eventually blew them and my amp(we wont get into that [Big Grin] ).But i have my new system(in my Sig),and i went to a friends house to show him.Its not much but its fine by me,anyway he has a Cavilier with 2 12s,can't remember the name, but not any brand name ones.So i let him sit in my car,and he is shooked. We get out and show him what i got in my trunk, and he precedes to say "I can't understand why my 12s don't sound like that",I almost craacked up,but my buddy who was with me said"Its cause his speakers are better".Then he goes(with a serious face mind you)"No....I don't think its that".I could not hold it in.Crazy ****.
