i just shaved (sometimes snipped) the necessary wires and sat under my dash for hours soldering the new wires in line. my back hurt, but im gonna be doing a lot of them at best buy now. well see what kind of "tricks" they have up their sleeves. the head installer at this location is actually legit and does everything right the first time.

I used a few t-taps in my truck, on wires that are hard to get to, havent had any problems. There is nothing wrong when you use the right t-tap for the right size wire.

o yeah i know it wasnt aimed at me. i just was trying to respond anyway so you guys dont think i solder EVERYTHING. as that guy up there is inscinuating. solder is very time consuming, and shop installers cant always turn to that. plus, if a tap can be put on just as securely and get as good a connection, why not do it? hey typhoon, im assuming i know you? i dont know who the username 170typhoon is, but you know my actual name so i assume we know each other?

Here we go again. Yes I solder everything except the ground. My work speaks for itself. T taps are not a good connection. They tear the wire. They also are not stealth. You can't hide a T tap job. The factory dosen't use them and neither will I.

If you work at Best Buy forget T taps. They are not allowed. Standards state all security connections are soldered. Anytime you interface with a stock wire you solder. It only tkes a few SECONDS to solder a connection. How can anyone say it takes too long? I did a 2003 Ion today with Viper 771. All wires taped black, all connections soldered and the brain hidden in the console. I use 1 inch loom to hide the trunk. The siren is hidden and I install the hood pin, tach and toggle switch. The whole thing took 2.5 hours.
I don't mean to offend. I install security not alarms. There is a big difference. I guess if you guys are just slamming out remote start systems T taps can work for you. I never do a remote start. It's always a full blown security system with the bells and whistles. Stealth is my prioity but quality comes first. When my security systems come back it's not install related. I had 3 Black Widow alarms come back this year. Each one was installed between 4 and 6 years ago. They each had internal door lock issues.
I am proud of what I do everyday.

I have a Weller and Ternma soldering stations. I also have a butane. It is SOP to solder all security connections. Look on ETK under performing instllations and read up on BBY standards.

As a locksmith (25+ years), I am all about security. I really take my time with installations. I also charge a premium. My alarms are 300 installed - most cars. Lately I solder most connection, although I have, and continue to use t-taps. I use the right size for the wire I am tapping into though. I believe if used correctly, they will work fine, and last. In 10+ years of installing alarms, I believe I only had one or two returns that had trouble that was related to a t-tap. When I install a security system, the only time I see the customer return, is if they need something else, or they damaged a remote. I have seen the t-tap argument on here many times. I say - to each their own.
Let me ask this of the guys that solder... What do you do to cover up the soldered connections? Especially when they are in a hard to reach area? How do you skin back some insulation to get some wire to solder to?
