My Camaro came with the factory alarm system, im not sure what it consists of...but i have alot of money invested into my car and have been looking at aftermarket alarms, he thinks its a waste.

Someone please explain to me if the factory alarm is enough protection. Or give me facts on what it does and doesnt do as opposed to an aftermarket alarm.

Thanks

What year is you Camaro?
Most Camaros do not come with a factory alarm. You may be refering to the VATS system. If you camaro is newer than a 1988 it has a chip on the key. This is an anti theft devise. Not an alarm. The VATS system is good for preventing someone from driving the vehicle off without a key, but it will do nothing to protect the contents of your ride.
I would advise an aftermarket alarm.

DO this simple test. you can do this in front of your dad to demonstrate the need for an alarm. Roll the driver window down. lock the car as you do normally. wait 1 minute. IMPORTANT.. Reach in through the window, and manually unlock the door using the manual unlock button, NOT the power lock button (if equipped). This will simulate somone breaking into your car. Now open the door. What happens..??? Nothing. Unless your car is equipped with an aftermarket alarm.

1996 and newer had factory alarms available-----actually the impact sensor is located behind the right rear panel in the vehicle-----it is a code-alarm impact sensor----- get an aftermarket alarm------make sure you shop for an installer---not a certain brand alarm----the installation determines whether or not your alarm is going to work correctly or not

Your stock alarm will not be enough IMO.
Get an aftermarket alarm. Chances are your system might get stolen even with an alarm but why not make a theif work that much harder for your hard earned money. Tell your dad to screw off, put the money into it. Its well worth it. If people know you dont have an alarm your going to get it ripped off. But even if your half assedly serious about auto security many people think twice before jacking your stuff.

Go for an aftermarket. I have replaced many of the factory camaro alarms due to theft of their equipment with the factory alarm.
