Today my midranges will arrive (Focal Audiom 7K2). Have to build new kickpanels for them. The only problem - I am not sure that there is enough space for both midrange and tweeter in the kicks as the mids are 7" and the tweeters are big as well (Focal TLR).
I was thinking of installing the tweeters on the dash firing directly to the cabin while the mids are in the kicks and the midbasses - in the doors. I realise that time alignment problem will arise but I have Alpine PXA-H600 DSP that is supposed to take care of it.
Is it good idea or shall I better install the tweeters next to the midranges to achieve the best SQ?
All speakers are driven actively (Butler amps).
Thanks.
Fred

I think I would try to mount those tweets in the middle of the mid's. Make it kind of like a point source driver. Doing it the other way is going to cause multipath problems that no processor I know of can knock down.

I had that idea before but the tweeters are really BIG (5 x 3 inch)! They cover the entire cone of the midrange.
As an option I can try to put them so that the tweeters cover 1/8 of the cone (don't know if its gonna cause any problem yet)but it will make terrible inconviniences for the legs.
I have seen lots of cars (winning installs) that have tweeters and midranges far from each other. How do they handle the multipath problem?

They use some serious signal processing to pull it off. Phase control and time alignment are used by a majority of these installs. They can be tweeked to make it sound as though the mid and tweet are coming from the same area, even when they are a couple of feet apart.

To the best of my knoledge Alpine PXA-H600 is the best phase/time processor available today in car audio. So I do have one. Will it really help?

I personally feel that DSP and stuff like that are simply band-aids, covering the symptom, but not curing the illness. Yes, you should be able to get away with it. Will it sound as good as if you didn't need the processor? Maybe, but maybe not.

Ok my turn speaker placement does have ALOT to do with imaging but dont always belive that you have to have the speakers on the same axis to get the best SQ. I am a seasoned Sq judge for both U.SAC and I.ASCA so i consider myself a expert when it comes to sq.
Ok this is just for refrence and i hope it helps anybody. I built a car with a VERY simple install and speaker placement which placed 2nd (out of 18+) at U.SAC finals with the highest SQ score out of all the novice and Some pro cars. This car's SQ was judged but Ed martin ( 6 years sq judge ) and John Pitts aka The reaper ( placed 1st last year in the expert class at I.ASCA and U.SAC finals) so these guys know what they are doing.
Ok here is the info your looking for, The car is a 1996 Toyota Tercel with AudioBahn 6 1/2 aluminum Componet kit. With the 6 1/2" in the doors and the !" tweeters mounted to the A piller of the car with the tweeters angle matching the curve of the windsheild. Thats it for speaker placment. Subwoofersare 2-AW1200 in a sealed enclosure in the trunk. now the electronics H.U-Clarion 6575 E.Q-AudioBahn AEG5 In trunk EQ/X-over- AudioBahn AEQ200 with the EQ set flat (only used for RTA) Amps-AudioBahn A2200 50x2 (mids/highs) -AudioBahn A2400 100x2 (subz) Wiring-Audibahn Misc-2-1f AudiBahn caps
this system is simple and sweet it works great and aparrently for what the judges say it has awsome sq. I hope this helps and if you have any questions feel free to ask im not anybody specialjustsombody whos done alot of workin the sq area.
P.S this car got better sq scores than several other cars that i built with kick panels ..almost made me sick .... o well to learn is to live

Thunder built a car that placed 5th at USAC a couple of years ago that had unconventional speaker placement. It had MB Quart speakers all around, with 6 1/2s in the doors for midbass, and the midranges were mounted by the front seats firing forward and to the center of the car- think that is what he descrided to me. The used deck power only.
I heard a 4 Runner that had horns mounted over head and firing down at the dash. One of the best sounding cars I have heard. He was using Illusion Audio all the way around- fyi.
Seems the ears are a very easy thing to fool. But more often that not equal path lengths, the whole kick panel thing is the safest bet for "proper" SQ placement.
