Audiophyle I agree. I would like to see the rules. From parts I have heard test is with a scope to make sure all levels are the same and what not. He claims that you cant hear a diff. Well I can say that I have never tested 2 amps under this condition but from what I have compared I can tell. Some also might not know what to listen for.

It has been a while since I last read about this challenge, but if memory serves me correctly, the test was conducted using an ABX switch so that the listener was not able to tell which amp was being brought into the signal path. The amps were all set using a scope to make sure that the gains were all set equally. The prize was for anyone to correctly identify which amplifiers were being run as they were switched in and out of the path. I think that the best score was about a 45% accuracy. Please don't flame me for my recollection... if anyone is really curious, let me know and I'll try find the exact method that was used - I think it was outlined in A2TB a few years ago.

They also conducted the test at CES.....two years back i want to say now. And, yes, you have to compare amps that do the same power and that are of similar build quality. High end vs. High end, mid vs. mid....
I'd be willing to bet, if anybody still wants a crack at it, he'll still put the money up.....he's never backed down from a claim to my knowledge.

Ahhhh, but all of the amps people have suggested here ARE good quality amps! And you guys STILL believe that there are easily identifiable sonic signatures to them??
The particular test I was in had a Rockford CD player, a pair of Mirage home speakers (very nice quality) and an Alpine 50x2 amp. Our A/B comparison was between the Alpine and a 'Rockford amp' which turned out to be the CHIP AMP in the CD! Best room results were in the 50% range. The test was conducted by Gary Springgay of RF and was not meant to show how 'bad' the Alpine was or how 'good' the CD player amp was - just that it is darn hard to tell the difference. Incidentally, Gary relayed that when he was tested by Navone and Clark the 2 different amps were a Soundcraftsman (huge $$$) and a cheapo the size of a pack of cigarettes.
Just keep them unclipped......

Dukk, it is hard to tell the difference, but there is one nonetheless, and yes, if you want me to demo "sonic signatures" to you, I'd oblige. You can do it at the store between decks, or home equipment. I hear a difference, I may not have a scope on the equipment, but there is a subtle difference between soundstage, and attack, warmth, depth, etc.. all these attributes may vary with different brands, if they didn't I'd be surprised there hasn't been a patent infringement suit about it yet.

Eli, I spoke with my father in law about something similar to this. He is a patent attorney. Anyway, he says that there are only a few things on this earth that cant be patented, one is scent, the other is sound. You can copyright those, however!

I suppose those can't be patented because they are too subjective.... kind of like judging SQ Posts: 2737 | From: Mankato MN | Registered: Jun 1999

I just find that the "scientists" among us (not referring to anyone in particular) tend to say that there is no differance, yet the audiophiles say yes there is, it may be psychosomatic (spelling?), but enough to cause controversy, ending with an acknowledgement that we all hear differently, depending on what our ear drums have been through in life.

I would tend to agree. Some people dont believe in psychoacoustics, yet we all know it really does exist... kinda like santa claus... you either believe or you dont...

What, no Santa!? Geez, there went a paradigm shift- Gotta love Steven Covey, not. Anyone besides me read Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance? Seems like the whole Romantic vs Classical division happening here. If anyone wants me to explain what I mean I would be more than happy to.

Did Harley Davidson not patent the sound of their v-twins to combat the Japanese bike builders making similar looking/sounding bikes?
