OK, here is the situation. I have a set of RF FNX componet 5.25's up front. I have recently purchased some FNX 6.5's that I had planned on replacing the 5X7's in the rear with. I got to thinking, and was wondering if it would be ok/good idea to remove the 5.25's and put the 6.5's in there place. Then put the 5.25's in the rear. I don't think that this will hurt the X-over that comes with the components in any way. I figure, the bigger the better up front, what do you think?

Do you like the way the 5.25's sound? If so, by changing out your 5.25 with the 6 will more than likely destroy what you like about the front end now. I am of the school that it doesn't really make a hill of beans of difference what you have, it's how it sounds. I have a set of 5" subs upfront that sound better than my 10" subs in the rear of my car. Problem with the 5" subs is they just dont have a lot of output, so I augment them with the 10's. Anyway, use your ears to be the judge. It sure wouldn't hurt to give it a try, but you may like it the way it is now more than you will with the 6's up front.

STILL waiting to hear a GOOD pair of HLCD's!!

If it dont fit, force it... if it breaks, it needed to be replaced anyway...

I have fnq 6.5s in the kicks that sound great. I think you may get a small amount of extra image information from the larger mids as they will play a few hz lower, but it may not be worth the work to change. Also it depends on what you expect from the set that you have left over.
I think the xovers are the same for each size of mid.

The 5 1/4 will have a quicker midrange response than the 6 1/2 will. The 6 1/2 will have a better midbass response than the 5 1/4. 6.5 in the doors and 5.25 in the kicks will give you great sound for the front stage.

When it comes to SQ, I would say opt for "Front Stage" and "Rear Fill". Use the 6's up front, and if you MUST, use the 5's in the rear. I would omit the rear speakers for a number of reasons. You get natural rear fill in most any car without rear speakers (fade all to the front, cup your hands, and place them in front of each ear, you will hear mids and treble from the back.). When you do have rear speakers and passangers in the back seat, the most common thing you'll hear is "what did you say? turn it down I can't hear you".
Since we rely on high frequencies for image and staging and, since the higher the frequency the more directional it becomes, and since glass reflects higher frequencies, and there is plenty of glass in a car....
And last but best reason for me is that "the first rule of Italian driving(Gumball Rally) is whats'a'behind you is not important."
Leaving the rear speakers out of the picture, will allow bass from the trunk to get into the car easier.

Use what sounds best to you. Bottom Line. But like Audiophyle said changing the speakers out will really change any sound stage you may have. SO more sdjusting there.

Thanks for all the input. I will let you know how it turns out. I think that I am going to put the 6.5's in the door. Right now the sound stage seems a little low. I think I am going to angle them up 30 - 45 degrees.
