Could someone explain to me the importance of the damping factor? What's better, a higher number or lower? Why do some amps have it adjustable? Thanks!

Damping factor is the ratio of the output impedance of the amp to the load it is running. Higher is better, however anything above 100 is fine. Some companies *claim* that you will hear a difference and that you should buy their amp because it has a DF of 10000, but that is BS. I pretty much ignore the stat. I am not sure what you mean by amps having it adjustable. I do know that if you change the impedance the amp sees, it changes the DF. A 4 ohm load will have twice the damping factor of a 2 ohm load, etc. Part of what makes a tube amp sound so unique is that their DF is extremely low, around 40 or so. Anyway, just ignore the stat. It really is meaningless.

Thanks for the explanation. I nromally ignored it until I saw that the Helix HXA 1000QX had an adjustable dampening factor from 100-2000. That started to make me wonder if it was important or not.
