Ok, over the coarse of my years i've always had the 145+ db stereo that went really loud and deep, and shook my nuts.

I'm getting older... not nessisarily wiser... but maybe deafer!

and i've been wanting to build something totally new to me, a vehicle with a absolutly beautiful install (no more MDF or carpet) that still can play loud SPL "if" i feel the need... but has the SQ to back it up

most stereo guys dreams eh? well i have the need... i have the will... don't have the money yet (in school)... and i'm willing to put in the time and love to make it perfect.

So now comes the hard part... what to buy that is not insane, but still very good. and i've come across CDT Audio, i've heard nothing but rave reviews from alot of people who say they can preform up there with Boston pro rally, and even some focal/MBquart higher end models without breaking a sweat.

I really want a brand/company that isn't common around my area (Saskatchewan Canada) so it seems perfect for me. I was also considering OZ audio, or Rainbow maybe even A/D/S but i really like the looks of the CDT and the price range isn't terrible

Sooooo... now the question, What series to buy? What kindof amp should i run to these speakers? where should i try placing them to get proper imaging?

I've been looking at the HD-642 3 way system and right now its on my top of the list, i'm thinking about totally redoing my door pannel to house the 6" woofer in a fiberglass sealed box, and then since i'm a big guy and have a standard i don't want to mount the 4" in kicks... so its either on the doors also... or i'm thinking the tweeters on the A-pillar's and the 4" beside them reflecting off the windshield.

I could do that... or a 2 way setup with the speakers in the door

or maybe (2) 2 way setup's with a 6" and tweet in the door, and the 4" and tweet up on the dash

I still debating on rear fill... i usually do have passenger's in the back so i think i'll keep somthing back there turned down really low so when the bass is on they can still hear the music but it cannot ever overpower the front stage.

For subs, i recently bought a set of 12" Concept Audio PT12's... i simply love the subs... i've heard a set each in .3 cu^ft sealed box (yes... they work in .3) with 1200 watts running to each... absolutly breathtaking... i've never heard such loud, but "perfect" bass before in any car. Mind you around here SQ isn't done... its all SPL.

So for subs, i'll be running a pair of those in my trunk in roughly 5cu^ft ported box tuned to approx 30-35hz with interchangable fiberglass ports so when i go to compete i can throw in the 60hz port and maybe win [Wink]

for an amp... i'm looking at one of the new Zapco/concept/planet audio big boys for the subs and for the components... i'm not sure. should i buy the insane SQ amps like Xtant or Udimention etc or if i picked up a good amp that is made by the same company as my sub amp would i notice much difference? I would prefer to not have too much of a mutt system

The deck i'll be running right now is a Pioneer DEHP-7300... eventually i'll upgrade to probably the new pioneer deck whenever i get the rest of my gear.

So what do you guys think? does what i say make sense... or am i totally out to lunch? I'll admit i know jack about SQ so ANY info or tips will be appriciated. Like i said above i'm willing to put in the time to do this right... i just need the right info to make sure what i do will work out in the end, and thats where i'm hoping some of you can help me with.

Cheers,
Tom

First off sound-dampening is a MUST in my opinion, especially for an SQ car. I would strip the interior completely except for maybe the dash, get loads of sound-dampening paste and do the entire interior with that, then put a few layers (at least 2?) of Brown Bread, RAAMmat (the cheapest stuff I have found), or something like that - no need really to spend money on Dynamat when other cheaper stuff does the same thing.

I've heard the same about CDT's, that they are very good, although I think the Oz and the a/d/s/ have better midbass response. I have a/d/s/ 3-series, but right now I wish I went with the Oz Matrix components because I really want a pair of Oz Matrix 12's. Dammit, oh well, hindsight is 20/20 isn't it?

That's all I can say, that's about all I know...SQ is new to me too. I'm learning.

Since you are in Canada, I'd look into AVI speakers...beautiful stuff.

What year/model Cavalier do you have? I might have a few hints for you. I drive a 96 Z-24, and have had a few different configurations in there.

And regards to the AVI speakers, like em/love em... but there is a guy who can get me the CDT's and he lives within a few hours from me, he's going to let me listen to the 3 way set in about a week so i think i'll order through him.

But your right... beautiful stuff [Smile]

For one thing, I definately reccomend firing the subs forward in the trunk and sealing off the front of the box from the trunk. Take the back seat apart and cut some of the metal away so that bass can get through it more easily. I did this and there wasn't hardly any difference with the seat up or down. Also, if kicks are out of the question, you can fit a 6.5 in the door, with a little work, but you'll probably have to put something in the kicks, whether it's just a tweet, or a 4 and tweet. Dash and or A-pillar mounting isn't a real good idea because of the extremely non-symmetrical dash.

Well i'm pretty happy with the bass right now with the seat up or down, there is plenty even with the backseat folded up

I was thinking about looking into putting the 6,4,and tweet all in the door, i could fiberglass a pod to house them all i'm sure with enough work, only question is how would the imaging be if my leg is sitting right in front of the speakers?

somtimes i wish i wouldn't have gotten standard then i could've just put in kicks...

but then i smarten up and slap myself for thinking like that [Smile]

You should be able to fit small kicks holding the 4 and tweet while still leaving plenty of room. If Q-forms are made, I'm sure they leave enough room for shifting. Also, I have done a different Cav, a 4 door with 6.5 coaxials in the stock locations, and found that swapping the phase on the driver's side coax gives better imaging. The soundstage in his car is nice and wide with correct image placement, but image focus and soundstage depth are poor.

Excellent recommendations & advice above. In addition to their recommendations, I personally like the sound of Vifa mid-bass drivers. I've not run their tweeters in a very long time, same with Morel - but from what my few remaining brain cells can remember, they were both very nice!!

Winslow had a few links in a thread here in the SQ Forum or Mids/Tweets Forum in regard to where to find the likes of Focal, Vifa, Morel, Dynaudio, etc. for very nice prices. I've personally used Parts Express and have had very good results (people are probably getting tired of me touting my Vifa 8s - home system).

Good luck & welcome to the SQ/SQ+ side of things [Smile]

For Vifa, Accuton, Peerless, and Scan Speak I would choose www.speakercity.com

For Eton I would go to www.meniscusaudio.com

For Seas, Accuton, some PHL, Morel, Focal, Audax, Cabasse, Hiquiphon, and Raven I would go to www.zalytron.com

For PHL, Focal Utopia, Manger, ATD, and Cabasse I would go to www.e-speakers.com

For Boehlinder Graebenher Ribbons, Focal tweeters, and some very cool very inexpensive house brand drivers made by Peerless I would go to www.gr-research.com

Other companies like Parts Express have some of these speakers too, but all of these companies are great to deal with and have very knowledgable friendly people working there. Danny at GR Research is awesome.

I would NOT buy speakers from Madisound b/c they are jerks and have higher prices than anyone else.

i would go with the a/d/s comps..like the 641 3 ways or something.....i hear that they are breathtaking.......for subs i would look at the a/d/s also.......they are supposedly awesome for the price( i like them), and they can get loud if you want them to. however, if you like the concept subs, then get them. the zapco would only make them sound better. id look at monitor amps from www.ampmanaudio.com for you components.....they are supposed to be very nice for the price......
